Animation | Posing [1]

After an initial lecture briefing us on 'Toolkit Year 2: Maya and Animation', we were asked to find some photos of action poses, which we'd work from when posing 'Moom' (an existing, professionally rigged character) in Maya 2018.
The following images are my 5 initial poses, and the notes made to improve (courtesy of Alan). Images 1, 2 and 4 had the subjects just as they'd had landed, or were about to enter an key pose, so to more easily see where the curve of the body, and weight was mostly distributed.
Images 3 and 5 used extreme, key poses.
The images used are from Scott Eaton's 'Bodies in Motion' project: http://www.scott-eaton.com/photography/
.
[1]
>Tension in arm,
>Tilt head back further a little,
> Right foot is planted more on ground to hold weight.

[2]

> Spine is too straight. This is the main source of movement/weight distribution, so make sure to move it first. Exaggerate if need be.

[3]
> Make left foot point more towards the right. Keep note of the feet as a means of indicating where the character is about to go to next,
> Push chest further out,
> Move the hip further towards the camera
> Consider using dots on the hips and shoulders to help with positioning.

[5]
> Point foot more,
> Lean slight more forward,
> Have head facing further down,
> Re-adjust hip and knee positioning.

The next step will be updating these poses with the improvements.

  1. When you save images from maya, make sure you select 'color managed' then it won't be dark.

    1. Hello Alan,
Thanks for the feedback- I'm not sure why the images are dark as the 'color management' setting was on?
