Digital Drawing Lecture 6- 'Maya to Production Design' Part 1.

Between 'Maya' and using basic shape as main working points from which to then add details, I'd experimented with Ernst's tendencies towards circles, referenced my previous Frottage samples, and used my digital take on Grattage (taking away, scrapping or rubbing off existing areas) to create the following, multiple snapshots:

I referenced sand-like (or even, at an opposite extreme, arctic 'deserts'), but in all honestly I think I should perhaps put more designs into a forrest terrain. Something that's likely to be more personal to the artist himself.

They're not in anyway final outcomes, but rather different potential states for future designs.
For instance, I've ideas of future structures: the sloping 'mountain' in the mid-ground, as inspired by 'La Horde' 1927, and 'After Us Motherhood' of the same year. With that kind of dynamic structures seeming to materialise in and amongst the wide, empty space... or the circles that either impose upon the image, or burn into the painting to leave empty voids. The vast, blue, cloudless skies that speaks of an endless, unlimited sky. Also quite reminiscent to European painting etc.

Also the idea of the elements hanging almost separately to one another, but managing to relate by a single, overarching characteristic. Whether that be narrative, attempting to be told... Or even the attention the placement of these objects.
Now I have an idea for the 'look' or Max Ernst 'style', the next couple of posts will be more focused on individual designs. The challenge will be in making these designs clear enough to work from in Maya, in the weeks to come.
