Script Version 3.
Act 1.
INT. The Office
The reaper is seen watching the screen. He's watching the 'Employee'- one worker out of the many lives tracked- as he happily does his work. Years pass. The candles in the background of 'The Office' are seen to melt down, all but one[OR]The dates on the ledger change, all but one.
The reaper remains the same.
EXT. The Warehouse- Present
Employee has died. Caught in accident outside. He expects to be taken to the afterlife.
He waits. And waits. But no one comes.
He travels his normal route to work, [on the train- *], and finds his usual warehouse look's different. Older. Victorian.
INT. The Office
We have a short scene where the Reaper watches this happen on a screen. Drawn out of his stupor in curiosity.
Act 2.
'Employee' tries to look around.
He see's the signs and papers of the strike. The factory is empty. Silent.
No one like himself is sitting in the waiting room.
A short scene of the Reaper contemplates his 'Artifact', an ancient looking candle that has stayed unchanged for nearly a millennium. He remains hidden in his office, with a huge ledger. Written upon the pages are numbers, each standing for each person. He looks lost.
Act 3.
Employee finds the Reaper.
"Why did you come here of all places? When this is the same place you've stayed for your whole life?"- Reaper. "How can you spend your whole life moving candles? They will only last for a moment. They'll go as quickly as they come. How?"
"This is you"- points a bony figure on the ledger. "Nothing more, nothing less. A person in the many."
A pause.
"Don't you see? You're not the first and you won't be the last. They'll never be 'the last'."
Employee says "It's not about the bigger picture, It's about the feel of the winter morning air in your lungs. The effort of lifting a box, and lighting a world for someone else.
That candle will illuminate. Even if it's just for a moment. But at least it does."
In an exchange of words with the 'Employee', the Reaper decides to retire. He puts down the ledger.
Travels on the train [shot mirrors *] to a seaside town, and escapes.
2 months later we see him selling ice-cream on the beach. Appreciating the value of the short-lived moments. The camera zooms in on something we recognize as an 'artifact'. The wax is melting, and time is moving on.
The employee takes over his job, happy to continue life as he was before.
He looks at the scene and watches 'The Reaper'. (--> The end?).
